J&G gathered their people at Villa de Lucca, a Tuscan-inspired private estate on a hilltop in Templeton, just outside Paso Robles. By the time the wedding day arrived it barely felt like an event anymore. It felt like the middle of something that had already been going for a while.

This wedding reminded us exactly why we love destination wedding photography.

Not because of perfect weather or beautiful scenery, though there was plenty of both. Not even because California wine country photographs like a dream. What made the weekend unforgettable was the feeling running quietly underneath everything: presence.

People weren't rushing through moments.

They were inside them.

Destination Weddings Unfold Differently

By the time the wedding day arrives, everyone has already shared so much. Flights. Welcome dinners. Late-night conversations. Slow mornings. New places and new people.

The emotional texture gets richer because the experience does.

Instead of a single fast-moving day, a destination wedding unfolds like a story across several chapters. There's room for anticipation. Room for intimacy. Room for connection to develop naturally.

That changes the imagery entirely.

Some of our favourite photographs from J&G's weekend weren't the traditionally important moments. They were the in-between pieces that destination weekends create so effortlessly, and they're the ones that still carry weight years later.

Villa de Lucca, and Why the Estate Shaped the Weekend

Villa de Lucca sits on ten acres of hilltop above the Templeton and Paso Robles wine country, about fifteen minutes from downtown Paso Robles. Tuscan-inspired, panoramic in every direction, and (this is the part that mattered most) with a private guest villa on the property.

That last detail is why the whole weekend felt the way it did. When people are staying at the venue rather than scattering to hotels each night, the wedding stops being a single appointment on everyone's calendar. Breakfasts happen, people linger. The celebration has somewhere to go after the reception ends.

The reception took place in the Jasmine Sanctuary, an open-air structure wrapped in star jasmine that blooms through the warmer months. Photographically it's a gift - an architectural frame that's alive, so you get structure and softness in the same shot without setting up a single thing.

For couples considering it: the estate holds up to 150, and its openness is both the appeal and the thing to plan around. Hilltop means very little shade.

The light is the biggest adjustment coming from BC. Ours is soft and diffused most of the year; cloud cover does the work of a scrim for us. California wine country is the opposite: bright, hard, high-contrast, and on an exposed hilltop there is nowhere to hide from it.

That's not a problem so much as a different set of decisions. You shoot with the sun rather than fighting it, you use the estate's structures for shade when you need to soften a portrait, and you let golden hour do what golden hour does out there, which is considerably more than it does at home.

If you're planning a wedding here, this is the thing worth talking through with your photographer early; not because bright light is bad, but because it shapes your timeline. Where the ceremony faces and what time portraits happen matter far more in Paso Robles than they do on an overcast day in the Fraser Valley.

This weekend gave us so much of that.

There's something deeply moving about asking your favourite people to leave their routines behind and enter a shared experience with you for a few days. It creates closeness naturally. People stay longer at tables. Conversations deepen. The weekend becomes less transactional and more communal.

From a photography perspective, that closeness changes everything. The photographs stop feeling like isolated moments and start feeling like part of a living, breathing narrative.
