Monika & Nenad softly said "I do" in a Secret Garden kind of way.
Celebrating a quietly maintained love on the most perfect Mother's Day.
A garden wedding that felt effortless, elegant, and personal
Monika & Nenad
There are wedding days that feel big and boisterous and loud. Then there are wedding days that feel quietly joyful. The kind where every glance lands softly, every detail feels intentional, and time somehow slows down just enough for everyone to actually be there.
Monika & Nenad's day was exactly that.
Tucked into the heart of Vancouver, VanDusen has this rare ability to feel both expansive and intimate at the same time. One moment you’re wandering through lush winding pathways beneath towering greenery, and the next you’re standing in a pocket of stillness that feels completely removed from the city. It’s part garden, part secret world, part European daydream dropped right into the West Coast. It was the perfect secret garden for our gentle couple, and as a Vancouver wedding photographer, these are the kinds of spaces we love most. Places with texture, movement and soft surprises around every corner.
The Morning Before the Garden
The getting-ready portion of the day had this modern, moody edge to it that we didn't expect and immediately loved.
Monika got ready in a room off the garden with raw concrete walls and beautiful natural light coming through tall windows — the kind of room that photographs like an editorial shoot before the day has even started. Her mum and her sister were close by. Her bridesmaids in sage green helped her into her dress and raised a glass before they headed out. Nenad and the groomsmen poured Jameson Black Barrel into crystal glasses and toasted before buttoning up, which is honestly the exact energy you want walking into your wedding ceremony.
We were in the room for all of it. Not directing, just present. Catching Monika laughing with her veil still half-pinned. Catching the moment her mum looked at her before they left.
Those images exist because nobody was performing for the camera. That's the whole point.
The Ceremony
VanDusen's ceremony lawn is surrounded by mature trees on every side, with the Vancouver skyline just barely visible through the canopy. It gives outdoor ceremonies here this feeling of being completely tucked away from the city while still sitting right in the middle of it. White chairs on the grass, simple white pillar arrangements framing the altar, and the garden itself doing absolutely everything else.
Monika walked down the aisle through a path of blooming rhododendrons in pink and red, her bridesmaids ahead of her. Those photos are some of our favourites from the entire day. The way the garden framed her approach, branches and blossoms on every side, guests turning in their seats, Nenad waiting at the end of it - none of it needed any direction from us at all.
They exchanged handwritten vows, both of them holding their own pages, reading to each other while guests leaned in and the garden stayed perfectly quiet around them.
And somewhere in the front row, their sweet son had very strong feelings about the proceedings and was absolutely not going to sit still for any of it. Which made the whole thing feel even more alive.
After the signing and the recessional, they walked back down the aisle with their hands raised, guests throwing confetti and cheering. That photo captures everything about who they are as a couple.
From the very beginning of the day, we all breathed in a very grounded kind of joy. Nothing felt rushed or performative. Just people fully present with one another.
Why Spring Is the Best Time to Get Married at VanDusen?
If you're planning a VanDusen wedding, late April through early June is the strongest window photographically.
By mid-May the rhododendrons are in full bloom and the colour range across the garden is extraordinary - deep pinks, purples, bright reds, all sitting against lush green backdrops that make portraits look like they belong in a magazine without any additional styling.
The light at this time of year is soft and diffused for most of the day, which changes how your whole timeline feels. We're not chasing a narrow golden hour window, which means your portraits can happen at a pace that's actually relaxed instead of rushed. That difference shows up in the photos.
VanDusen also has a beautiful golden hour of its own in late May, when the evening light filters through the tree canopy across the open lawn and creates that warm backlit quality you can see in Monika and Nenad's sunset portraits (pro tip: ALWAYS do the sunset photos). That light on the garden pathways in full spring colour is hard to replicate anywhere else in Vancouver.
For logistics: VanDusen sits just off Oak Street, which makes it easy to reach for guests coming from Richmond, Burnaby, and Surrey without the parking and traffic chaos of a downtown venue.

What VanDusen Gives You as a Venue
There's a reason VanDusen continues to be one of the most sought-after wedding venues in Vancouver. It manages to feel luxurious without being stiff, and refined without losing its warmth.
For couples planning a wedding in Vancouver, it offers an incredible variety of backdrops within one location:
- lush garden pathways
- romantic greenery
- modern architectural elements
- open natural light
- secluded pockets for portraits that feel private and intimate
Photographically, it really is the dream for all the most romantic shots. And because the space already carries so much beauty on its own, couples can lean into a more understated, elevated design approach without the day ever feeling visually empty.
How We Shoot a Wedding Day
We never want your wedding photos to feel overly posed or disconnected from the actual experience of your day.
We want them to feel lived in. Honest. Artful without losing emotion. Editorial without losing your personality.
This wedding gave us so much room for lived-in moments. Between the quiet pockets tucked into the gardens, the windswept movement through the pathways, and the soft Vancouver light filtering through the trees, every frame carried this sense of natural ease that we're constantly chasing in our work.
We believe your wedding photos should feel like memories first.
Of course we care deeply about beautiful imagery. We notice the light hitting your veil and the way your dress moves. We're always looking for the tiny in-between expressions that happen for half a second and disappear again.
But more than anything, we care about preserving how your day feels. The moments that become irreplaceable years from now.
Our style sits somewhere between documentary storytelling and refined editorial imagery. We'll guide when needed, step back when needed, and create space for your wedding day to actually breathe.
The Reception, Where the Real Personality Came Out
The reception moved into a a room right off the gardens with floor-to-ceiling windows, warm wood accents, and long tables set with elegant florals.
And then, their families took over, and it became exactly the kind of party it was always going to be.
A nephew grabbed the microphone and delivered what appeared to be a full speech, or possibly a performance, to the room - completely uninvited and completely confident. A sister from out of town started a dance battle with a child on the open floor that was genuinely more entertaining than any planned entertainment could have been. There were cannoli on wooden boards, champagne glasses clinking, kids running between tables, and Monika and Nenad in the middle of all of it. Laughing. Present. Completely in it.
We move through a reception the same way we move through every other part of a wedding day: close enough to catch the real moments.
That's the difference between reception photos that feel alive and ones that feel like documentation.
